This program is for dedicated practitioners and teachers who want to understand in more dimension the history of modern yoga, the philosophical streams that comprise it, and the texts and contexts that characterize its landscape. Attention will also be paid to the pertinence of this information for the modern practitioner.
Texts & Contexts refers to the multiple streams of histories and philosophies that flow into what comprises modern yoga today. Although it is common to think of contemporary yoga as one thing with many styles, the history of yoga is complex and a thorough understanding of its texts and contexts is integral to bringing back nuance and scope to what is often compressed in service of easier understanding and even marketability.
This will be the precursor to a yearlong series of in-depth study and close reading of seminal yoga texts that will start in January 2027. We will meet for 4 sessions during the fall before we kick off the yearlong in January (registration will be separate and optional).
Thursdays from 6:30-8pm EasternSeptember 17
October 1
October 22
November 12
Classes will be conducted on Zoom and recorded and sent to those who cannot attend, but participation live is encouraged. Cost is $100. In cases of financial hardship, please email me for scholarships: laura@ahrens.yoga
