Texts & Contexts: A 4 Session Series Fall 2026

This program is for dedicated practitioners and teachers who want to understand in more dimension the history of modern yoga, the philosophical streams that comprise it, and the texts and contexts that characterize its landscape. Attention will also be paid to the pertinence of this information for the modern practitioner.

Texts & Contexts refers to the multiple streams of histories and philosophies that flow into what comprises modern yoga today. Although it is common to think of contemporary yoga as one thing with many styles, the history of yoga is complex and a thorough understanding of its texts and contexts is integral to bringing back nuance and scope to what is often compressed in service of easier understanding and even marketability.

Thursdays September 17, October 1, October 22, November 12 on Zoom from 6:30-8pm Eastern. Click the URL below for more info and registration.

Yama & Niyama: The Backbone of Yogic Living

Yama & Niyama: The Backbone of Yogic Living

This day-long retreat is a primer on the first two limbs of yoga, yama and niyama, the restraints and observances that make off-the-mat yogic living possible. There are five yama, and five niyama, and while each could be the subject of its own workshop (stay tuned), this is an in-depth overview and introduction to the ecosystem of yama and niyama in their relation to each other, to the practice of yoga, and a yogic life in the world. They're often thought of as ethical precepts, and this retreat explores how they can be implemented in our lives like banks on a river so we can flow forward in the direction of practice and towards who we are becoming because of it.

Includes tea, coffee, morning snacks, a full local and organic veg/vegan lunch, and a printed handout “presentation” to follow along with the lecture. The day will include active postural practice (with meditation and pranayama included), lecture, and discussion. Click here for registration.

Deeper Yoga Philosophy

Deeper Yoga Philosophy

This lecture considers the nuance, detail, and scope that has often been ignored or flattened in foundational yoga education. This free two-hour starter session is for every student and teacher. If you’re new, this will offer a primer and a lay-of-the-land that will situate you and start you off on the right foot. If you’re an experienced practitioner or teacher, this will fortify your foundation with specificity and precision. I always address texts and contexts: I will give a thorough overview of yoga history insofar as it shapes the outline of yoga philosophy, and introduce texts and their concepts from the literal place of translation and tradition and then their applications in modern day practice. My work focuses on yoga philosophy in a way that is accessible but undiluted, and I plan to do the same in this introduction.
